Pathfinder's day trip to Asticou Gardens on Mount Desert Island, Maine May15, 2011

A bit of a wet day but I had a good time visiting the gardens with friends from the Pathfinders walking group.

Spring 2011 Planting in the Square Foot Garden

Getting the Square Foot Garden ready for another season. Transplanting the onion seedlings that I started in the house on February 6th., planting Peas, Beets and Spinach. A look at some of the seedlings that I have grown in the light garden and are now out in the unheated greenhouse to harden off before they are transplanted later in the month.

Building A Chicken Coop

Be it ever so humble there's no place like home....

I have ordered day old chicks to arrive in late May so I have been busy building a chicken coop. First time I've ever built anything so it has been quite a learning experience but I'm satisfied with the job and I think the Chickens will be comfortable. I have been making video clips as I go along and now I'm putting them together into a small series of short videos.

A little more progress

A little more progress, originally uploaded by Campobello Island.

Beautiful day for working outside today. I got one side of the roof shingled and after I took this picture I tore down the scaffolding and built it back up again on the other side of the coop so whenever the next good day arrives I'm ready to shingle the other side and the peak.

Spring is bursting out all over.

Spring is in the air and you can see the changes almost daily. Tree buds are at the bursting point and the spring flowers are at their peak.

Spring has arrived

Dog-tooth Violet, originally uploaded by Campobello Island.

Great to be back home and enjoying my second spring. The early flowers are starting to come out the crocus are finished and the daffodils are in bloom. This Dog Tooth Violet and clump of my favourite primrose, Primula Veris were in full glory yesterday, more spring rain today.

Painting the town red....................

When finished it will have white corner boards, fatcia at the eves and batting along the seams but I though I would make less mess if I painted it first and then paint all of the trim before I put it up. Other then this I need to install the door and windows and shingle the roof. I was going to put one window in the door but now I think that might get broken if the door blew back in the wind so I have decided on two windows one each side of the door.

Building my Chicken Coop

Starting to look like a coop now. I got the back wall sheathed this afternoon and I ordered my chickens from Ohio they will hatch on May 23rd and I should have them by May 25th. Nine Bantams various breeds and straight run, so I hope they are not all roosters, I know there will be at least one Silkie and three Mottled Cochin Bantams the other five will be a mystery and six brown egg laying hens, standard size breeds a mixture of at least five different breeds.

Early Heather

Early Heather, originally uploaded by Campobello Island.

Technically it is a Winter Blooming Heather and in a mild year I have seen it bloom in March. I usually have to rush out to enjoy it though because as soon as it blooms the wild rabbits eat it down to the ground. I have several Heather varieties and this is the only one that they bother.

Clivia

Clivia, originally uploaded by Campobello Island.

This was just starting to grow three blossom spikes before I left for my trip and I was sure it would be finished before I got back home but I guess the house was cool enough that it slowed it's growth down and the first blossoms opened today, a week after I got back home.

Royal Wedding Kitsch

Royal Wedding Kitsch, originally uploaded by Campobello Island.

Couldn't go to London this spring without coming home with some Royal Wedding Souvenirs. I bought the little plate for my aunt and the Tea Caddy for myself.

R.H.S. Garden Wisley

R.H.S. Garden Wisley, originally uploaded by Campobello Island.

For my Birthday treat I took the train to Woking so I could visit the R.H.S. Garden at Wisley. I have seen several garden programs that featured the garden and I have wanted to get there for years now. It certainly did not disappoint.
